Philosophy and Autobiography

Course number : PL101
« back to classes page
It is generally accepted that knowledge of the historical and social contexts of a philosophical work frequently can assist in its interpretation. Can a philosopher's autobiography provide similar assistance? Are there inherent limitations to this approach? To help us answer these questions, this course will focus on the autobiographies and related works of three influential philosophers: Rene Descartes, “Discourse on Method”; David Hume, “My Own Life”; John Stuart Mill, “Autobiography”; and a major religious figure, who was also a philosopher, Cardinal Newman, “Apologia Pro Vita Sua.”
