Anti-Jewish art, literature, and folklore throughout the ages depicted the Jews with animosity creating enduring negative stereotypes. This enculturation of society helped pave the way to Nazi anti-Semitic ideology, which ultimately resulted, in its most extreme form, in the annihilation of one-third of European Jewry during World War II. Anti-Semitism in today’s world is making use of this ancient repertoire of slurs to rekindle the prejudice and hatred of the Jews. We will discuss anti-Jewish texts from the early church fathers throughout the 20th century anti-Semitic authors. We will also view anti-Jewish imagery from the Middle Ages to today.
