Vincent Van Gogh: A Journey from Realism to Expressionism

Course number : AP106
« back to classes page
In spite of his enormous output, Vincent Van Gogh’s art spans only the last 10 years of his life (1880 to 1890), symmetrically divided between his so-called Dutch and French periods. Van Gogh’s Dutch period is deeply rooted in the European Realist tradition while his French works gained the artist enduring fame and moved the Expressionists to claim him as the predecessor of their movement. We will examine the body of Van Gogh’s work in order to understand the legendary status and fame of this painter who only sold one painting during his lifetime.
