The History of American Slavery

Course number : HS100
« back to classes page
The study of American slavery is glossed over, intentionally distorted or completely ignored in most American history classrooms and textbooks. Given the brutality of the “slave system” and its incongruity with America’s professed commitment to equality, liberty, and justice, ignoring or distorting the truth is not surprising. Revisionist historians and Confederate apologists who have sought to minimize the brutality of American slavery and to challenge its racist underpinnings bear significant responsibility for our distorted view of this foundational part of American history. Those of us who have access to the truth, but chose not to explore it, are equally culpable. This course offers an opportunity to explore that history.
