Understanding the Enigmatic Art of Hieronymus Bosch

Course number : AP108
« back to classes page
The art of Hieronymus Bosch stands out as among the most phantasmagorical and complex of his time. Various art historians claim the key to understanding Bosch’s seemingly hallucinatory art lies in secret visual clues of a heretical Christian sect to which the artist may have belonged. On the other hand, the Surrealists, whose works are inspired by dream imagery and subconscious-related fantasies, claim Bosch as their spiritual father and earliest predecessor. In this presentation, we will follow the empirical approach of art historians who view Bosch’s art in the context of the times and society in which he lived.
